Health and Welfare Management of Pigs Based on Slaughter Line Records

چکیده
Society is increasingly concerned about health and welfare of farm animals. The origin of that concern seems to be a lack of transparency and reliable information about the way in which animal-based food products are actually produced. In order to include these aspects in animal production and achieve safe market products for human health resulting from welfare friendly systems [1], producers need to consider animal health and welfare management [2].

Animal Welfare Evaluation at a Slaughterhouse for Heavy Pigs Intended for Processing
The Council Regulation (EC) No. 1099/2009 requires slaughterhouse managers to implement specific standard operating procedures for all pre-slaughter stages considered at risk, aimed at achieving adequate levels of animal welfare. This survey was aimed at testing the applicability to an abattoir for heavy pigs of an assessment system of animal welfare through animal-based measures. In the monito...
متن کاملDelaying pigs from the normal production flow is associated with health problems and poorer performance
BACKGROUND Delaying pigs from advancing through the production stages could have a negative impact on their health and performance. The objective of this study was to investigate the possible implications of delaying pigs from the normal production flow on pig health and performance in a farrow-to-finish commercial farm with a self-declared All-In/All-Out (AIAO) management. RESULTS Three flow...
متن کاملIdentifying physiological measures of lifetime welfare status in pigs: exploring the usefulness of haptoglobin, C- reactive protein and hair cortisol sampled at the time of slaughter
Background Physiological measures indicative of the welfare status of animals during rearing could form part of an abattoir-based animal health and welfare assessment tool. A total of 66 pigs were used in this study, the aim of which was to assess how serum concentrations of haptoglobin (Hp) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (assessed in 51 pigs), and hair concentrations of cortisol (assessed in 65 ...
متن کاملEstimating the scale of adverse animal welfare consequences of movement restriction and mitigation strategies in a classical swine fever outbreak
BACKGROUND The study aim was to quantify the impact of movement restriction on the well-being of pigs and the associated mitigation responses during a classical swine fever (CSF) outbreak. We developed a stochastic risk assessment model and incorporated Indiana swine industry statistics to estimate the timing and number of swine premises that would encounter overcrowding or feed interruption re...
متن کاملGross and histopathological evaluation of human inflicted bruises in Danish slaughter pigs
BACKGROUND Human inflicted bruises in slaughter pigs are hampering animal welfare, are an infringement of the animal protection act, and are a focus of public attention. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the gross appearance of human inflicted bruises in slaughter pigs and to compare the inflammatory changes in two lesions as a basis for estimating the age of lesions in the same pig....
